How to Draw a Butterfly

Posted by Anna Golub on

This past Valentine's day , we posted on instagram a quick little tutorial of how to draw a simple butterfly! We break down the steps below so that you can easily draw one for your kids, or have your kids learn themselves!

  1. First, paint a sideways heart with some watercolor, or drawing with colored pencil will do. Our chosen color to use was pink in honor of Valentine's day, but feel free to choose whatever color you desire. Lighter tones and colors will probably work the best.
  2. Second, paint another sideways heart opposite and in reflection of the one you just painted or drew. Try to get them to be about the same size.
  3. Third, pick a different color and paint or draw a single straight line right in between the hearts. This is the body of the butterfly!
  4. Last but not least, take a thin black pen or marker, and add some eyes, mouth and antennae to the straight line you just drew! Add pretty detailing to the sideways hearts, or rather, the wings of your butterfly! Personalize this face and detailing as you like; for example, we added eyelashes to our butterfly.

And there you have it! A simple and cheerful butterfly to boost some happy into your day! Hope you or your kids enjoyed this tutorial! Be sure to check out our other drawing tutorials and browse our original artwork displayed in our greeting cards or journals
